I wrote this in February, disappointed that the new SECAF was jumping on the overpaid troops bandwagon. I hoped at the time that shed refine her stance as she got a more immersive notion of what airmen and airpower are all about. But after 57 base visits and enough selfies to choke a WOPR-sized mainframe, shes done nothing to distinguish herself as an independent voice in this area. As a result, the bandwagon rolls on, and in a couple of days, Congress will finalize a spending bill that does nothing to rein in out-of-control contracts or close unneeded bases. It does nothing to ask the 99% of Americans who are passively benefitting from national defense services to pitch in a little more to fund them. But it does include a paltry raise that trails inflation, along with asking the rank and file to pay more for their own housing and medical needs. We will look back on this time with a sense of moral outrage. Unless SECAF embraces some of the boldness she exhorts in others, shes likely to be remembered simply as the one who was running the Air Force when the all-volunteer force drew its last breaths.
