I wrote this poem for my wife, LeiLani, who is away in Tennesee with Taryn and Chris. I love you, and miss everything about you. Hurry home soon. I WAIT FOR YOU By Michael Hegwood I wait for you, and as I do… I look to the sky, and see the clouds. Suspended. Silent. Hardly moving. Yet, if I rushed into the heights beside them, they would travel fast. Like the tall-masted ships of old… They sail majestic, with purpose, racing on currents invisible into voyages unknown. And like you, they speed away, and soon, are wrapped in the distant mist, and disappear… And as they do, I think of you, so distant from where I am, yet so solidly fixed within the deepest part of my heart. My breath. My life. My reason. I wait for you, and as I do… At night, I listen to the leaves outside my window. Swaying in the trees, falling to the earth, riding the wind. And like impassioned lovers, They are gathered up, and dance in the breeze. Swirling, spinning, rustling, whispering… Soon, they too are swept along in the evening’s breeze. Whirling, circling, spiraling, hurrying away… Soon, their whispers fade, and are gone. And as the quiet descends, I think of you, invisible and silent, yet so much a part of my life, that your spirit, your beauty, your passion… They are fire, heat invisible, burning my night into day. My breath. My life. My reason. I wait for you, and as I do, I look to the sky, and see the clouds… I wait, and like them, I am… Suspended. Silent. Hardly moving. But deep inside, my heart races with purpose, for soon you will return to me. LeiLani, travel fast, and like those tall-masted ships of old… Sail majestic, with purpose, race on currents invisible… Come home into my arms, where you belong.
