I wrote to Bill Nelson (FL) and here is his reply. So much for trying to change his mind. Dear Ms. Kelty: Thank you for contacting me regarding comprehensive immigration reform. No matter how anyone feels about this issue, we can all agree the system we have is broken, and it needs to be fixed. On June 27, the Senate passed the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act (S. 744). The bill passed with bipartisan support; now it is up to the House to act. Border security is a national priority, and under the bill, before any undocumented persons are able to apply for legal status, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) must submit and implement a plan to secure our borders. S. 744 makes securing our borders a priority by giving DHS and local law enforcement the resources and tools they need. It would increase the number of Border Patrol agents and Customs and Border Protection officers, and invest in cutting-edge surveillance technologies, including virtual fences and unmanned aerial vehicles. The path to citizenship laid out in S. 744 is a sound and reasonable approach: anyone who is here must follow the rules, not have a criminal record, pay taxes and penalties, learn English, and go to the end of the line to have an opportunity to get a green card. I will continue to work to strengthen our borders, and I remain committed to much-needed, comprehensive immigration reform. Please do not hesitate to contact me in the future, as your communication helps me better serve you in the Senate. Sincerely, Bill Nelson
