I wrote up a long post about DJing that many people took offense to when I said Mixing isnt a Talent, that anyone could mix. I was referencing beatmatching more specifically as opposed to mixing which obviously requires a lot of talent and musical knowledge, people just enjoy jumping to conclusions and taking grand statements out of context. I was referencing what I DO, not what other people do in other genres of music or in their individual careers, and I guess I didnt make it clear enough that the post was about me... Thats why I exclaimed my profound respect for Laidback Luke (and A-trak, whom I didnt reference, but I feel like shouting out). They both have conquered styles that I have by no means touched. I just do my thing, which is mix in ableton, really quickly. The whole post was about silencing the people who dont respect the new wave of DJ technology, and how most people who listen / go to sets dont care about the means to create, but only care about the creation (as they should, the type of brush shouldnt matter if the painting evokes a certain emotion). Mixing is a silent skill, not an overly apparent talent [talent and skill are completely different beasts, skill is learned, yet talent is innate] when listening to a set. A transition (of course) matters, but doesnt regulate the playing field. So thats why I said what I said, and meant no disrespect to the mix-masters / vinyl champions out there; I was just defending what i do when I play my set, not actively insulting someone else when they perform their set, that would make me a hypocrite. Im just saying what I do is a little different, and I got a little angry in defending my craft. - J
