ICAR @ 86 ICAR congratulates and compliments all stakeholders in agriculture and allied sectors on its 86th Foundation Day. Since 1929, ICAR is striving to realize its vision, “ensure food and income security for all, through technological innovations and sustainable agriculture”, and acting upon its mission, “harness power of science and education with a human touch for higher and sustainable agricultural production.” During the journey several milestones were achieved. We are proud to share some of recent salient research achievements: • Prepared the Atlas on Vulnerability of Indian Agriculture to Climate Change and formulated 450 contingency Plans for vulnerable districts. • Highest food production of 264 million tonnes (estimated) achieved and more than 1450 new crop varieties/hybrids developed in last decade. • India became a global leader in horticulture with a production of ~269 mt by 2013 and developed more than 340 improved varieties/hybrids of fruits, vegetables and related crops. • In Animal Science, quality breeds and management strategies led the country to register highest milk production of 133 million tonnes in the world. • Multi species model of culturing Indian carps developed and impact and vulnerability assessment of inland fisheries to climate change carried out. • More than 5100 prototypes of precision equipments and ergonomically designed agri-implements developed for better energy efficiency. • With 24 new SAUs and two CAUs established in the last decade, the number of agricultural universities rose to 70. • 638 KVKs have been established as innovative vocational training institution for improved technical literacy of the farming community.
