ICNY Co-Sponsored Event: Hiroshima and Nagasaki Annual Memorial Interfaith Gathering Date: Monday, August 5 Time: 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm Location: The Interchurch Center, 475 Riverside Drive @ W. 119th -120th St, New York City Reverend Dr. T. Kenjitsu Nakagaki, Japanese Buddhist Priest, President of the Buddhist Council of New York and Vice Chair of the Interfaith Center of New York, will lead an Interfaith ceremony with local Christian, Buddhist, Jewish, Hindu, and Muslim leaders to commemorate the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Messages from the mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki will be read. Hiroshima survivor Tomiko Morimoto West will share her story. The event will also feature performances by Japanese and American musicians. At 7:15 pm EST, the exact moment of the Hiroshima bombing (Japan time 8:15 am on August 6) bells for peace will be rung. A special photography exhibition from Hiroshima & Nagasaki will be on display from July 29 to August 5 on the ground level of the Interchurch Center. Prior to the commemoration ceremony, a Family Program will be held. The experience of Hiroshima survivor Tomiko West will be presented in the form of Kamishibai, Japanese traditional storytelling, by Jonathan Fluck. Tomiko herself will be present to answer questions. Toshiko Kobayashi will teach children how to fold origami cranes, which after WWII became a symbol of peace in Japan and around the world.
