ICYMI: Edmonton Journal published an opinion last week by Rep. Owens and Rob Merrifield, Senior Representative to the U.S. for the Alberta Government and former M.P. for Yellowhead. The piece explores the continuing impact of NAFTA 20 years after it was first ratified. Heres an excerpt: Even its harshest critics must acknowledge that trade liberalization under NAFTA has had a positive impact on many American communities, depending on their geography and economic composition. For example, in the four years following NAFTA’s enactment, U.S. manufacturers added more than 800,000 jobs, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Today, U.S. trade with Canada and Mexico has grown to support nearly 14 million American jobs, or more than one in 10 jobs in the private sector. Of these, nearly five million jobs are now supported by the increased trade under NAFTA, and these export-related jobs pay wages that are on average 18-per-cent higher than positions without a direct connection to the international economy, reports the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
