ICYMI: We applaud the Federal Communications Commissions recent decision to drop a deeply flawed proposal that would have allowed one company to control both broadcast and print news outlets in the same market. The proposal by former FCC chair Julius Genachowski was designed to benefit News Corp CEO Rupert Murdoch - whose control of FOX got in the way of his efforts to acquire the Tribune Company (parent of the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times and The Baltimore Sun, among other papers) earlier this year. We hope that new FCC chair Tom Wheelers announcement signals a halt in the trend toward ever greater media consolidation that weve seen over the past two decades - and a renewed commitment to the agencys duty to serve the public interest rather than just industry powerbrokers. Want to ask him yourself? If youll be in the Bay Area on Thursday, January 9, we invite you to join us - and our partners at Center for Media Justice, Free Press and the National Hispanic Media Coalition - at a special Oakland townhall connecting Chairman Wheeler to the public he represents. Space is limited, so RSVP now at tinyurl/FCC-Oakland
