IDENTIFICATION VS LABELING Identification is distinct from - TopicsExpress

IDENTIFICATION VS LABELING Identification is distinct from labeling where "labeling" means limiting. Labels are liberally applied: people are labeled Talented and Gifted, Learning Disabled, Attention Deficit Disorder, Seriously Emotionally Disturbed, and others. A common concern about labeling people with FASD is that, unlike other conditions whose cause is unknown, FASD immediately implicates the parent(s): drinking caused this condition. It may be easier to diagnose ADD than FAS since this avoids naming the cause, but without identification of the issue, prevention efforts are compromised. Used supportively, identification provides a beginning, a way to develop a language for talking about FASD, and a way to develop effective supports for children and achieving prevention.
