Part I/ Interview - What is your full name? - Can I see your ID? - Where are you from? - Do you work or study? - Do you think your name is special? Actually, the name Trang is very common in Vietnam. You would be surprised at how many girls here are named Trang. But, in a sense, this name is special to me because my parents gave it to me and it will stay with me for my whole life. - in a sense: theo một cách nào đó. - you would be surprised at: bạn sẽ ngạc nhiên nếu biết (tình huống giả định), nên sử dụng would. - Is there any meaning to your name? Its an interesting question to ask. Not many people nowadays think my name has a particular meaning. However, according to my mother, the name has a Chinese origin which means elegance. I guess she expected me to grow up into a fine woman. - Who has chosen it for you? My mother once told me she gave my father a list of her favorite names for a girl and he got to pick a name in the list. So I guess it was a decision of both. Or: My mother used to tell me how she and my father had spent months looking for a name to give to me and finally, they came up with this simple yet meaningful name. - once: đã từng, 1 lần (I once made a horrible mistake) - get to do something: được làm cái gì (I got to be in charge while the teacher was away), phân biệt với: have got to do something: phải làm cái gì - ls there any special method to choose a name for a baby in your country? I have heard that there are many myths about choosing a name for a baby in my country as well as, I believe, many other Asian countries. For example, a baby mustnt be named after any of its relatives. People often make a joke of this taboo, claiming we are running out of names to give our children soon. Also, names are supposed to have some meaning in my country, so its a common practice for parents to name a child Bright or Prosperous or Beautiful, hoping the kid will live up to its name. - myths: những chuyện đồ thổi, hư cấu, kỳ bí, không thật - name after someone: đặt tên giống ai - make a joke of something: đùa giỡn về cái gì - taboo: điều kiêng kỵ - run out of something: hết cái gì - its a common practice: đó là 1 việc làm phổ biến - live up to something: sống xứng đáng với cái gì Chú ý dùng participial clauses: People often make a joke of this taboo (by) claiming that ..... hay parents name their baby bright (because they) hoping that ..., vậy khi vế sau giải thích, bổ sung chi tiết cho vế đầu và 2 vế cùng chủ thì rút về thành thế này, nghe chuyên nghiệp và tự nhiên hơn. Chúc các bạn thực hành được.
