IF IT’S MONDAY-IT’S HALLELUJAH TIME It is Monday in the great city of Freetown, but today is different. The air is clean and brisk because we had a tremendous downpour of rain early last evening and most of the night. Of course up at Leicester, we get not just rain but a gigantic windstorm before the rain starts to pour down. I had plans to go watch an international football match on TV, but whilst I was relaxing in my "lazy-boy” chair the place suddenly became dark and the wind started to blow everything in sight. I rushed to close the windows in the house and by 9PM I was all wrapped up in my quilt with the radio blaring some serious reggae music and before I knew it I was sound asleep. I even missed my usual Sunday evening chat with my girls in Pennsylvania! I love it when it rains at night up in Leicester, the temperature drops and it serious sleeping weather. With no power or TV to watch, it becomes an invitation to cozy up to bed wrapped up snuggly for the night. This is going to be a busy week for me as I have several meetings in preparation for my departure next week. I just sent out the latest prayer-letter from DISCET. If you are not on the mailing list and would like to get on it, please contact my son Alan at asimbo@rfmusa I went to church at Birdsall UB Church in the Cole farm section of western Freetown. The service was great and we sang some choruses that I had forgotten for a while. I used public transport to and from church. It is always an adventure riding in the taxis from Leicester to Model school on Circular Road. We get packed like sardines without the lubrication of oil that sardines are usually packed in. 7 people in those tiny Nissan Sunny vehicles coming down all those hills and of course the drivers shut the engine off to save fuel, talk about “going by God’s grace”! On the return journey, I always occupy the front seat with the driver and I pay for “2 people” so I can have the seat to myself. I avoid the front seat going downhill figuring that with 3 other people in the back seat I have a little bit of human cushion if we should (God forbid) crash! Last week as my driver was taking me to work in the morning a big truck ahead of us suddenly disappeared. His brakes failed and he crash landed into one of the university staff compounds, only a tree in the compound stopped the vehicle from hitting the house. Amazingly the driver survived without a scratch. By the time we got to the scene we saw a guy standing by the road and shaking like a leaf, my driver asked, “Where is the driver? Is he alright?” and the guy said, “I am the driver!” You know I always say a prayer of thanksgiving each trip we make up and down that road. You are not only going downhill or uphill but there are lots of curves (Deep “s-curves”) and the drivers drive like they are on a racecourse. I am grateful to my driver for the care he now takes, after I had yelled at him at the beginning of our relationship! Hope you all have a great week. Billy
