In May 2013 we heard it on the news that the Taraba Government in partnership with the Dangote Group of Companies will soon establish a sugar processing company in Lau Local Government Area of the state. Dangote Group of Companies recently issued a cheque of N1.2billion to the Taraba State Government being money meant for the compensation of the people whose lands were acquired. The State Government hurriedly constituted a committee to handle the compensation but, for over 2 months, none of the land owners receive one kobo, not even the Committee were able to render any explanation to those waiting for their payment. Reports reaching us from Taraba confirmed the N1.2billion was diverted into other politically induced program leaving the land owners stranded without their lands nor money. The Acting Governor, must be reminded that if the establishment of Sugar Processing company in Lau was part of plans by the state government to increase its internally-generated revenue and create jobs for the youths, he must adhere to the rules of transparency. All compensation must be paid in good time, do not subject the youths and their parents into artificial poverty by way of denying them their own sweat. We are calling on the Acting Governor to avoid such practice that will jeopardize his own effort. The decision to divert such money meant for compensation will surely send a wrong signal to Dangote and also, the Chinese Company that are yet to pay for another 20,000 hectares for rice production in Taraba State. ALSO, LATE PAYMENT OF SALARY TO CIVIL SERVANTS IN YOUR STATE WILL REVEAL THE LEVEL OF CORRUPTION IN YOUR STATE.
