IGNORANCE OF THE PAST It is sad, listening to young ‘bible’ Christians speaking of the so-called ‘dark ages’ when Catholicism was the religion of all Christians, to realize that otherwise intelligent human beings actually think that, even for the educated, there was absolutely no knowledge of the Bible until the invention of the printing press and the translations into the vernacular languages. This makes about as much sense as claiming that no one gave birth until the introduction of modern hygienic hospital techniques, or that no one ever travelled until the invention of the automobile; or that no one had light in the evening before electric lights were invented. Where do such people imagine that the Bible lay hidden until it providentially reached their ancestors who, in 1450 began to use mechanized means of reproducing books? How do they imagine it was reproduced before printing was invented? And by whom? Martin Luther answers the question for them: ‘We are obliged to yield many things to the Catholics (among other things) that they possess the Word of God which we received from them: otherwise we should have known nothing at all about it”. (Commentary on St. John, xvi) Not only did they receive the Bible from Catholics — they received it in excellent condition. The Bible is a Catholic book, written by Catholics, for Catholics. If one wants to understand it, go to the authors.
