III. The COMMISSION of a Spiritual Leader [Previously: I. His CALLING; II. His CHARACTER] Every spiritual leader has a sacred COMMISSION from Scripture. It is a commission to serve, feed, lead, oversee, and be a living example to the flock of God. 1. Be a living example to the flock. “Neither as being lords over Gods heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.” (1 Peter 5:3) Motivational speaker, Dr. Alan Zimmerman said, “Some people dream of worthy accomplishment while others stay awake and do them.” A biblical pastor is a living, vibrant, forward-moving man of action – living out his faith and pursuing his God for all to see. He does this in obedience to Chrisit, not for the applause of men. 2. Feed and give oversight to the flock. “The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed: Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind.” (1 Peter 5:1-2) We have seen the CALL, the CHARACTER, and the COMMISSION of the spiritual leader. These qualifications are not man’s ideas; they are God’s! Commit yourself to your call; align your life with these qualities. Anything less is beneath the office and diminishes God’s work. God’s people deserve this quality of leadership, and by God’s grace, you can exemplify these qualities!
