ILOILO RIVER CRUISE DEVELOPMENT PROJECT The Iloilo River played an essential role in the history and culture of the Ilonggos for hundreds of years. The investment site is located in Iloilo situated at the southernmost tip of the Island of Panay, within Region VI of Visayas. Being part of the on-going Iloilo-Batiano River Development Program which is near in its completion, the Iloilo River Cruise is under its recreational zone and partly wharf development project as well. This will greatly enhance the tourists’ experience and provide sea-transportation among the Iloilo towns for further exploration. The investment requires a Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) agreement where the following specific investments are targeted: Establishment of the River Cruise (all infrastructure needed) Orientation and operation for the efficient and safe River Cruise project Requires rehabilitation of the Iloilo River: preserve significant portions of the river to achieve ecological equilibrium in the urban landscape and minimize chances of flooding by eliminating flow restrictions. Three Development Thrusts: Environment Conservation and Protection Development Recreational Zone Construction Wharf Redevelopment The river cruise will enhance the eco-cultural and tourism value of Iloilo. It will traverse from the Carpenters Bridge in Molo up to Sooc, Arevalo. The river can be a venue for water sports activities and various river-oriented activities. The proposed site is the whole 11 kilometers in length of the Iloilo River and immediate entities within the fifty (50) meter radius from the water edge. A multi-sectoral collaboration spearheaded by the Iloilo River Development Council (IRDC) who will monitor and evaluate progress. Government agencies such as the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will be involved in public infrastructure construction while the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) will be involved in monitoring the ecological impact of the project especially on water quality aside from the Local Government Units based on their areas of jurisdiction. The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) will also be involved with the redevelopment of wharfs. Iloilo has a population of about 2.2 million (2010 Census, NSO). Iloilo River is home to 22 mangrove species of the 35 found all over the Philippines. Of these 22 mangrove species, one is endangered. The river’s rich history dates back before the Spanish era where the marshlands surrounding the river, serves as a rich trading settlement between the foreign and local merchants, and the river as a major source of transportation, water, food and livelihood for the Ilonggos. lgsp-led.ph/investmentfair2014/iloilo-river-cruise-development-project/
