IMAGE MAKERS: THE FLOATING WORLD This piece of work inspired by oiran’s geta was created making full use of Japanese traditional artisanship. In addition to the leather dyeing method I introduced with the heel-less shoes, noteworthy are the small square bells. These bells were made particularly for this piece. Years ago, these bells were placed inside maiko’s “pokkuri” or geta. According to my acquaintance who used to be a maiko, the preferred type of bells depended on the “okiya” or the geisha house. At my acquaintance’s okiya, they put bells of different sizes in the left and right pokkuri. This small obsession reflecting individual sensibility still prevails in the beauty of style.
