IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 6, 2014 DARE SHERIFF’S OFFICE INVESTIGATING INCIDENT AT WRIGHT MEMORIAL BRIDGE The Dare County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an incident on the Wright Memorial Bridgeinvolving a person that apparently jumped off of the bridge. At 2:24 pm a passerby reported to 911 that there was an unoccupied truck parked on the bridge. Kitty Hawk Police units and Deputies responded and found the truck on the “hump” of the northbound lanes of the bridge. Officers located a note in the truck indicating that the occupant may have jumped off of the bridge. Dare County and surrounding law enforcement units had received a BOLO (be on the lookout) for this vehicle at 1:45pm to check on the driver. A search was immediately initiated in the water under the bridge by Kitty Hawk Ocean Rescue and Fire units. Members of the U.S. Coast Guard also responded. A body was recovered under the bridge at 3:45pm. The person was a male, whose name is being held pending the notification of next of kin. The investigation is continuing into the incident. Further information will be released as soon as it becomes available.
