IMMERSION: A Harvest West Minneapolis Devotional The Power of Beholding by Chris Asmus O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory.- Psalm 63: 1-2. Psalm 63 has served as a warm blanket to my shivering soul in many cold nights of spiritual drought and deadness. Have you found yourself shackled in the cell where God’s glory doesn’t feel glorious, his power doesn’t feel powerful, his love doesn’t feel lovely, and his truth doesn’t feel true? King David came to this conclusion: when your heart is not enjoying, your eyes are not beholding. David knew he didn’t need a vacation, he didn’t need “five simple steps of personal revival.” He needed to see and behold the white-hot, worship-igniting truths found only in God’s Word. He needed God’s depression-delivering grace that comes through beholding Him. Paul certainly understood that the grace that delivers one from spiritual deserts comes only through God’s Word. Have you ever wondered why Paul starts every epistle with “grace to you” while he closes every epistle with “grace be with you”? Paul’s prayer for people as they approach the Bible is that God will give grace “to” them, and his prayer for people as they go forth is that God will allow that grace to stay “with” them. Application: If you find yourself feeling dry and dull to the things of God today, it’s not because you are overworked or underfed; it’s not because you had a long week at work or a short night of sleep. Your heart is dusty because you have not been beholding glory. Set your eyes upon the cross that killed death for you! Lastly, know that Paul prayed for you a long time ago, “And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified.”
