IMO ASSEMBLY BAGS SECOND MOST PRODUCTIVE HOUSE IN NIGERIA The Imo State House of Assembly has been rated the second most productive Lawmaking body among the 36 States Houses of Assembly across the Country after the Nassarawa State House of Assembly. According to figures emanating from the database of the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission, RMAFC, the Rt. Hon. Benjamin Uwajuomgu led Imo State House of Assembly, between June 2011 - June 2013, recorded a trail-blazing success by passing into Law, 36 bills against Nassarawa’s 51 Bills. Details of the figures also shows that the Imo Assembly over-ran their colleagues in the South East Zone and came first, as Enugu and Ebonyi recorded a passage of Six bills each, while Abia and Anambra State score cards were missing from the Commission’s information pool. The Commission further gave a breakdown of the State’s performances as follows: Cross River and Benue State, seven Bills, Lagos State eight Bills, while States like Abia, Anambara, Borno, Delta, Edo, Ekiti and Katsina States had no trace of work. Further revelation from the commission also shows that 36 States Houses of Assembly in the Country only passed 601 Bills into Law within the period under review. A breakdown of the Lawmaker’s performance across the 6 geo-political zones of the country indicates that North West with 202 members passed 122 Bills, while South West Zone with 176 Lawmakers passed a total bill of 107. Others are North East zone with 156 members passed bills totaling 130 into law, while North Central zone with 158 lawmakers passing 125 bills. South-South geo-political zone with 158 lawmakers passed 69 bills, while South-East zone with 128 members passed 48 bills. It was however obtained that inputs of the Abia and Anambra States Houses of Assembly were not inclusive as they recorded no trace of work according to the commission. Reacting to the development, the Senior Special Assistant (Media) to the Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, (Mr. (Chukwuemeka Ahaneku) attributed the feat recorded by the State Assembly to the unfettered Unity and Peace, as well as the hardworking posture of the Assembly Members despite their different political leanings which saw the House also passing in three years about 200 billls and motions. He extolled the leadership qualities of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Uwajumogu, which he said had enabled him to steer the ship of the House, as well as the massive and uncommon co-operation of the members which has translated to democracy dividends and good governance being witnessed across the state. Mr. Ahaneku, further enjoined citizens of the state to continue in their support of the activities of the House, promising that the current rating of the House would spur the members into expediting actions on some of the laws which have direct bearing on the welfare of the people.
