IMPACT 2013: Packing Power into your Writing VPW Fall Conference September 20-21, 2013 At the Westwood Club 6200 West Club Lane Richmond, Virginia 23226 Our Speakers Keynote Speaker: Mary Miley Theobald is a historian and freelance writer. She received her B.A. and M.A. from the College of William and Mary and taught American history at Virginia Commonwealth University for 13 years. She has written nine nonfiction books, one novel, and nearly 200 articles for a variety of magazines and newspapers, most regularly for the Colonial Williamsburg Journal. Her most recent book, “First House: Two Centuries with Virginia’s First Families,” is the official bicentennial book for Virginia’s Governor’s Mansion. Last year, Mary won the national Mystery Writers of America competition for First Crime Novel with her Roaring Twenties murder mystery. Michele “Wojo” Wojciechowski: is a humorist, freelance writer and author of “Next Time I Move, They’ll Carry Me Out in a Box,” which won an award from the American Society of Journalists and Authors. She has spoken on the humor panel at the annual conference of the American Society of Journalists and Authors many times and was a faculty member and speaker at the 2012 Erma Bombeck Writers’ Workshop. She also speaks to business groups and has assisted many with her humorous and informative talks covering publicity, marketing, getting over the fear of public speaking, adding humor to your life and business, and many others that this sheet of paper is too small to include. Social Media, Digital Publishing and Ethics Guidelines: Jane Elizabeth is a Hampton Roads-based media consultant and a member of Old Dominion University’s adjunct journalism faculty. She began her career at Richmond Newspapers, first with The News-Leader and later with the Time-Dispatch. Jane spent 10 years as an editor at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette where she also taught journalism as a member of the University of Pittsburgh and Point Park University adjunct faculties. Jane returned to Virginia in 2004, serving as senior editor with the Virginian-Pilot, where she became the paper’s first director of Online News and established the Pilot’s online news department. She most recently worked as deputy editor at the Washington Post, where she launched and directed PostLocal and the paper’s regional web product, washintonpost/regional. Luncheon Guest of Honor: Susan Greenbaum has been singing as long as she’s been speaking, beginning in Kansas City, then at Harvard University, Boston and Richmond. She recently released her fifth CD, which is receiving significant airplay on Americana, folk and country radio stations. Greenbaum has won several national songwriting awards, including the Smithsonian, Philadelphia and Mid-Atlantic song contests and was a finalist in the John Lennon and the USA songwriting contests. She won for Best Singer-Songwriter in Style Weekly’s “Best Of” contest twice, and Richmond Magazine named her one of 50 major players in the Richmond music scene. Her philanthropic efforts have assisted many nonprofit organizations, including SPARC – School for the Performing Arts in the Richmond Community, The Positive Vibe Café, Caritas, Hanover Mental Health Association, Special Olympics, Goochland Free Clinic and Freedom House.
