IMPORTANT - LEE COUNTY VOTERS - NEED YOUR SUPPORT TODAY! Many of us have advocated eliminating at-large selection of elected officials in Lee County for many years. Lee County, and most other counties in Florida, changed from single member districts to at-large systems in the mid-50s in order to prevent a minority from ever being elected. We are now the largest county in the state still clinging to the Jim Crow inspired system. The system guarantees that there is no accountability from elected officials. The representative that carries the designation of your district is elected by the other 80% of the county, not by the people of that district. That is just the beginning of the reasons why at-large voting is a bad system. The southern designed at-large voting structure is unique to the south. Wherever you came from my bet is that it was single member districts and it worked well. Smaller electorates electing representatives that were responsible to them and working together to improve the area. While our County Commission continues to support the self protective at-large system, the Lee County School Board has been considering a change for several years. Tonight the change may become a reality. It will only happen if there is enough citizen support to again demonstrate citizen support for single member districts. News-Press polls have shown and overwhelming percentage support bringing elected officials closer to the electorate by having single member districts. This change has been supported by all local major political organizations, local NAACP and virtually every other issues involved organization. Please join us this evening at the Lee County Schools administrative building, 2855 Colonial Boulevard (behind the McDonalds) beginning at 6 p.m. If you want more information please contact Nancy at the number below or me, 470-4177. And please forward this to your email list. - - steve Sorry for the short notice, but I just learned yesterday afternoon that the School Board will be voting TODAY (Tuesday, June 3rd) on the method for electing members. Options being considered are as follows: (1) Seven member districts voted on at-large (as is currently the case with 5 members) (2) Seven SINGLE-member districts (which would give us a better chance at electing a minority) (3) A hybrid with 5 single-member districts and 2 elected at-large (second best alternative) We need to get as many citizens as possible out to the meeting in order to express our preference of the options and to show our concern regarding future elections ... hope to see you there!!!
