IMPORTANT APPEAL AS THE NEW APPROACH TO SIERRA LEONES EBOLA RESPONSE GETS OFF THE GROUND We continue to pray for the safety of the new US CDC multi-disciplinary team in Freetown led by Tom Frieden and for the new Ebola strategy to be stripped of all instruments of coercion in order to turn around the widespread public loss of confidence in the current Ebola treatment system. The credibility of treatment lies in the establishment of evidence that treatment can delay death or prolong life after Ebola. The credibility of the entire Ebola Response System lies in allowing TEST rather than MERE SYMPTOMS to drive conclusions that one is Ebola positive. Skepticisms and denials - though unfortunate - are currently encouraged by the high death toll under treatment and the decision to treat based merely on symptoms. Authorities and medics who continue to couch their own inefficiencies in the blind blame of skeptics and doubting Thomases should now go back to the drawing board to ensure that palliative care should be dispensed with dignity and persuasion, not parochialism and coercion. Declaring people as Ebola positives and treating them based on symptoms rather than tests should stop if it is true. The medics and the security forces enforcing non test treatment of Ebola should know that they could be participating in mass murder. The complaints are just too much about cases where symptoms alone are used as the basis for concluding that an ill person has Ebola. It appears that in the middle of Sierra Leones Ebola crisis Malaria, Typhoid and other common illnesses that share symptoms with Ebola have suddenly disappeared! This is the time for human rights organizations to be vigilant in monitoring cases of unjust treatment of people who may not have Ebola but are forced to undergo treatment for Ebola.
