IMPORTANT TAX INFORMATION FOR MEMBERS: Since this is a community, I wanted to let my friends know about a situation that has developed that may affect you this year. While this is not directly photo related, there are pro photographers (and other sole-proprietors) here who could be caught in this mess. This is about what Intuit (Turbo Tax) has done. For many years my wife and I have used Turbo Tax to files our income taxes. We have always used the Deluxe product, because it supported the necessary forms for a sole-proprietor (including a complex Schedule C). Well, without warning, Turbo Tax Deluxe has DROPPED support for Schedule C (for any deduction over US$100) and even Schedule D for investment gains and losses. They did this without warning or notification. You must buy a product now that is different from the one you may have used for years. (We used Deluxe since the 1990s.) As tax day approaches, it is Intuits habit to charge more for Turbo Tax. Therefore, I am quite concerned that some of the members of our community may have already purchased Turbo Tax Deluxe so that they could file their normal Schedule C, as they have done for years. NOT ANY MORE, without upgrading to a product that costs almost twice as much! This feels like a greedy violation of trust on the part of Intuit. Why not just have a rate increase and sell their software at a higher price? If you have recently purchased Turbo Tax Deluxe, Intuit will refund your money within 60 days. To receive your refund: 1. Uninstall TurboTax from your computer 2. Forward the confirmation e-mail you received for your order (if purchased online), or a copy of your invoice if purchased locally. 3. In the forwarded e-mail, indicate that youd like a refund. Intuit typically processes satisfaction guarantee refunds via check, so you can also include your mailing address in the e-mail to help expedite the process. Some good news is that this has caused such an uproar that H&R Block is offering FREE software that allows us to file our Schedule C and D forms. I have no iron in this fire except that I feel upset at Intuit software and will never use them again. If you want to use the free H&R Block software, there are instructions on their website (for upset Turbo Tax Deluxe users): bit.ly/1BZkopW
