IMPORTANT & TIME SENSITIVE! About 2 weeks ago, the Midwives Advisory Council and the Medical Board met to discuss the new regulations from the changes that went into effect January 1 for licensed midwives in California. I think most of you are aware of this change but in summery: • Licensed Midwives are now Independent primary care providers for women of the childbearing years, no longer requiring supervision • With this change, we *should* no longer have any hassle with obtaining the medications we need, ordering testing, and transfers. For those of us in the Bay Area, this hasn’t been an issue but has been for many midwives in more rural areas. The biggest downside of this new legislation was: • No breeches, twins, or post dates (42 weeks gestation and 0 days) • No informed consent/refusal for parents to decline transfer of care if the above or other issues arise. Which means, your right to refuse transfer of care is now no longer yours. I know I’ve talked to many of you about all of these changes and you’ve heard me rant about it all. The biggest thing that I am upset about is that they have taken away the rights of the parents to informed consent/refusal. They have taken this out of the new proposed legislation. The Medical Board is taking commentary from interested parties” through November 11th. They need to hear from YOU - THE PARENTS!! The midwives can only do so much and the parents - you as consumers - need to let them hear from you, that you don’t want your rights being taken away to make an informed decision regarding your care. This is a human rights issue!! The email address to send commentary is: Annamarie Sewell - [email protected] A simple, I feel, as a parent, that I should be allowed to choose my own care for my birth and my baby. If I choose to birth at home with a breech baby, twins, or post dates pregnancy, I should be allowed to have that right. Please pass this on to anyone who you think might be interested. Thank you!!
