IMPORTING YOUR DOGS, Part 1. (How to love the Balinese, part 5) Imagine how a Balinese feels, driving buy some foreigners fabulous villa. Right there, smack dab in the middle of the land where he practices magic, ritual, and ceremony so important to his soul, he sees them living in a palace whereas all he can afford is one simple room. Furthermore, in exchange for taking up all that real estate - typically 10 times more sq meters than a Balinese family needs - they are still not participating in Agama Hindu Dharma - the ritual, magic, and ceremony Balinese require to feel safe and secure between the worlds. This fact causes a deep metaphysical disquietude in him, in ways that the villa owner will never know or appreciate. After all, the villa owner knows Bali, and knows that the Balinese are sooo tolerant and always smiling. Im not at all saying this is wrong, either spiritually, economically, or philosophically. Im fully aware there are arguments on all sides of the fence. Im just asking my readers to think about how the average Balinese might feel about this scene, thats all. They dont understand the high falutin economic and philosophical arguments. They dont read The Secret. Now further imagine this: Imagine when he sees imported dogs at that villa, and understands how much was paid to get them here. He continues on his ride, sad that he cant even afford to buy a new motorbike, or an Iphone, much less get his pets to a new country for a new home. For that Balinese passerby, he sees that even an imported foreigner dog has a better life than he does, right here in his motherland.
