IMPOSITION AND DETENTION BOOKS....... The Imposition and Detention books were used to caution and discipline students while I was in AGS between 1973 - 1978. If your name appears in Imposition books 3 times within the week.......(i think) it attracts a Detention. Both the books were dreaded by each and every student. Its always in the custody of the Senior Prefect and used with extreme caution by the seniors in Form Five. It used to be an effective way of checking erring and disobedient ones from forms 1 to IV by the most seniors in Form V. Its dreaded. Not all offences carries imposition penalty, there were grades of offences, but minor ones like fighting and other rude behaviours. Offence must be justified for punishment before any imposition or detention of any student. These books were not used for witch hunting but for geniune and serious offences in those days. We all dread the 2 books, and God saves you if you are imposed or put in the detention book by a senior. You may be made to cut stubborn grasses on the Atlantic or Pacific. During my time, the Senior Prefect and the Assistant S P plus another Prefect must defend and justify imposition and detention of students in the Court of the Vice Principal, Mr S. A. Dada. The 2 books must be submitted to the VP on Friday morning for scrutiny. Judgement is on Friday after classes at 2 pm. Once a junior was imposed for a rude behaviour of Pshaw........an expression of contempt..............a very high Yoruba irony...........expressed by a dragging salivary sound from the mouth) to a Prefect, the student was imposed, The Vice principal called us to defend. He asked what is Pshawing........The same expression was performed by one of us in the VP office........haa thats a bad behaviour................The Student was severely punished. The book was at a later stage removed and substituted with the Disciplinary Committee, but students were not represented in the Committee, Only the teachers, The VP as Chairman. The procedure then was, if an offence is committed, the offender would be called to write STATEMENT...............Your statement becomes your defense among the Committee members. I narrowly escaped one by the sheer benevolence of Baba Adejuwon (The Principal) of blessed memory. May His soul continue to rest in perfect peace. Writing Statement was dreaded...............as Mr Dada will come on Friday morning to the assembly, after all the morning devotion, will get up and announce.................The Disciplinary Committee has met.........................the rest follows.............your guess is as good as mine......................... There was good discipline and tailoring to the ways of life............. UP AGS
