IMPROVE PERSONAL, HOUSE HOLD AND ENVIRONMENTAL HYGIENE - OJELABI. The Lagos State government has appealed to the residents in the State to embrace healthy living habits in order to curb the spread of cholera outbreak which was recently recorded in some parts of the state. The Commissioner for Rural Development, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, made the appeal on behalf of the State Government at the October edition of the monthly stakeholders meeting of his Ministry with Executive members of CDAs, CDCs and Neighbourhood Watch coordinators in the 57 LG/LCDA of the state. He said the unhealthy habits of some people was responsible for the recent outbreak of cholera in the State, stressing that despite series of public enlightenment campaigns and provision of public toilets some individuals still go about urinating and defecating in the open. Noting that some house owners still build their houses without toilets or construct boreholes near septic tanks, Pastor Ojelabi emphasized that the huge investment of the State Government on health makes it necessary for the citizens to complement Government efforts by being tidy and ensuring that their environment is clean at all times. He urged the CDAs and Neighbourhood Watch to teach their children and community proper sanitation and hygiene and report landlords whose houses are without toilets to the appropriate authority, adding that they should also be more vigilant and take the issue of security serious now that we are approaching the yelutide. In his own remark, Dr. Ismail Abdulsalam, who represented the Commissioner of Health, Dr Olajide Idris, at the meeting urged the citizens to observe proper hygiene with what he calls the “5 Fs” Fluid (Water) Food, Finger, Faeces, and Flies in order to curb the spread of cholera in the State. He explained that cholera is a disease associated with dirty water and poor hygiene and can only be prevented if we observe personal and general cleanness of the environment. While emphasizing the importance of taking and using clean water in the preparation of food, Abudulsalam noted that cholera is mostly contacted through contaminated water. Mrs. Tanwa Koya, Executive Secretary of Lagos State Water Regulatory Commission, who was also present at the meeting urged the people to make use of her Agency’s complaint boxes in all the Local Governments/Local Council Development Areas in the State to report any act or action that will disturb the supply of potable water in the state to the Agency. She also advised them to inform the Agency if they do not have water in their area and that they will be willing to liaise with the appropriate government agency to provide water for them.
