IN BONDAGE This is the time of year I try to avoid Wal-Mart as much as possible. The store is packed with Christmas shoppers, and when I look at what they have piled high in their carts, it depresses me. The lower income group have their carts filled with what I call junk gifts. Their children will get volume rather than quality. The higher income group have their carts loaded with all the latest hi-tech, and very expensive, gadgets. The sad part is that sometimes this group isnt actually in a higher income bracket - they are using plastic for all their purchases. I realized this when one woman in front of me at the checkout line told the clerk she had just finished paying off her cards from last years purchases! I saw a statistic that the average person has 30% of their income going toward debt. That does not include necessary debts such as a house or car. The actual problem is addiction - the more we have, the more we want, whether we can afford it or not. Debt puts us in bondage and God didnt intend for us to live in bondage. A good prescription for this addiction comes from Paul when he told people godliness with contentment is great gain. A modern rule of thumb might be if we cant afford it, we dont need it! Owe no man any thing, but to love one another... (Romans 13:8a). Love, Doris
