IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Mao Zedong, the populist leader who led to the creation of the modern state of China, wanted to revolutionize agriculture in his country (and control it in the world, if possible). He instituted the Great Leap Forward, which lasted from 1958 to 1962. As many people as possible were recruited to be farmers and helpers on communal farms. While Mao sold off grain abroad to pay his debts, the country starved. 30 million dead of starvation is the generally accepted number. A new book titled Maos Great Famine puts the number of starvation dead at 45 million. Sobering number. Every mass movement to control agriculture in history has failed miserably. Maos failed takes top spot. So far.
