IN THE NEWS: A model investigating when, where, and why complex human societies rose to power throughout history claims to be able to predict emergence of these societies at 65% accuracy. The largest predictor that contributed to the simulation’s accuracy the most? Warfare and conflict. According to the published paper (that also acknowledges that the model is not perfect and has its flaws), warfare forced people to develop complex and larger societies out of necessity and contributed to the rise of them more than any other factors tested.
