IN THE UNSURPASSED BEAUTY OF SURIGAO, THERE LIES DANGER Driving - TopicsExpress

IN THE UNSURPASSED BEAUTY OF SURIGAO, THERE LIES DANGER Driving up to the millionaires row along the gently rolling hills of Surigao City, I cannot help but compare its natural beauty to the rich enclaves of Malibu, California. The scenery though is far superior with the adjacent islands with white sand beaches and view of the small port city. It was breathtaking to say the least and foreign land speculators are putting their money where their sight is ! With the increasing magnitude, frequency and southern course of typhoons, there lies a known danger called Balud - the storm surge phenomenon. Much of the city is hugging the coastline at less than 10 meters above sea level. Worst shanties line up the river systems a few feet above water. A catastrophe in the scale of Haiyan experience in Tacloban may happen unless effective disaster management and governance is set in place soon. The dreaded funnel effect of storm surges generated by super typhoons on confined bodies of water will surely be catastrophic. The geographic features of the area, despite its amazing beauty will cause much damage and death in the event of a direct hit by a super typhoon. Surigaonons are encouraged to plan and prepare for such an eventuality to minimize the loss of precious lives. This is the new reality we have to face as a nation.
