INCIDENT UPDATED 3 MIN. AGO The Colockum Tarps Fire started at approximately 8:00 a.m. on Saturday July 27 in the vicinity of the intersections of Colockum Road and Tarpiscan Road, south of Malaga, Chelan County, Washington. Malaga is near Wenatchee, Washington. Although there was significant helicopter and aircraft effort made, the fire spread quickly, burning dry grass and brush, exceeding 1000 acres by 11:00 a.m. Several unoccupied structures and outbuildings burned. The incident continued to evolve and increase in size. The Chelan County Sheriff issued a Level 3 Evacuation notification to approximately 60 residences along Colockum, Tarpiscan, and Kingsbury Roads. Three primary residences and additional outbuildings burned. By 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 28 the fire had exceeded 7,000 to 10,000 acres and was continuing to grow to the South and uphill to the West. Containment lines are being built on the North perimeter and structure protection continued. Erratic, gusty winds from 10-15 mph, with gusts to 25 continued to affect the fire which has reached some timber. A Type 2 Incident Management Team took over managing the fire at 0600 on Monday July 29. The fire continued to grow, particularly on the unstaffed southern perimeter and uphill to the west. By Monday afternoon, when reconnaissance was possible, the fire exceeded 25,000 acres in size. Additional Level 2 Evacuation notifications were established by the Kittitas County Sheriff, affecting Colockum Pass Road, Trail Creek Road, Sheep Creek Road, Tucker Creek Road, Secret Canyon Road, Ryegrass Ranches Road, Parke Creek Road and Hilltop Loop). Effort continues to patrol containment lines on the north and east, improve and extend containment lines along the northwestern flank, and scout and initiate containment lines on the southern perimeter. inciweb.org/incident/3567/ (dm)
