INCIDENT UPDATED 7 MIN. AGO Incident Overview Good progress was made Wednesday on all three of the fires in the Independence Complex. Rattlesnake Fire 600 acres. The Rattlesnake fire was quiet yesterday. Fire fighters spent the day searching for hot spots near the perimeter. They were hard to find. This fire, located 20 miles southeast of Keller, started on the Fourth of July on the north shore of Lake Roosevelt and was controlled at 6:00 p.m. on July 8. Because of its size and difficult terrain, this fire will be monitored for several days or weeks. John Tom Fire 39 acres. This fire located 3 miles southeast of Keller was declared contained yesterday evening. Started by lightning on July 8, it was aggressively attacked by ground and air. If all goes well today, fire managers hope to call this fire controlled by the end of the day. Highway 155 Fire 163 acres. The Highway 155 fire was also contained yesterday. This fire started Monday afternoon (July 8) near State Highway 155 about 5 miles north of Coulee Dam and quickly spread uphill threatening several homes. Crews spent yesterday mopping up around the perimeter. If all goes well today, it will be close to control status. The cause of this fire is under investigation. Weather over the next few days is still a concern. The heavy winds predicted yesterday afternoon did not materialize over the fire areas. Todays weather may also bring strong winds and low relative humidity. Last Monday, a series of lightning storms created several new fires on the Colville Reservation. Initial attack on these fires was very successful. However, several fires appeared to require a multi-day operation to reach control status. To do this efficiently, the Mt. Tolman Fire Center asked the Type 3 Incident Management Team, then managing the Rattlesnake Fire, to assume responsibility for two new fires as well as final treatment of the Rattlesnake Fire. The Base Camp, which has resided at the Keller Community Center the last few days is being used to support these three fires. Tribal Police are asking travelers to use extreme caution when travelling through the area and on State Highway 155 in the vicinity of the fire.
