INDEPENDENT ADVOCATE With Capitol City Newsletter Volume 28, Issue 75 March 26, 2014 IAE-ISSN 0893-9470 IAE-IRS-EIN 47-01752-60 Founded in 1986 © Marlin Pals, 2014 WAL-MART DISCOVERS FOOD STAMPS “Food Stamps Key to Wal-Mart Profits” From the web, an article says that Wal-Mart has discovered the benefit of food stamps. “For the first time, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is citing its dependence on customers using food stamps in order to maintain its revenues and profits.” Other grocers and stores in the past made their profits when the food stamp customers got paid at the end of the month and came and bought food. I don’t know about other businesses, but I know that was true about the grocery business, and apparently still is. “Wal-Marts annual report to the Securities and Exchange Commission included a required cautionary statement which informs the public of factors that could harm future profitability, such as natural disaster and civil unrest; the public assistance inclusion was new.” Republicans and conservatives have been so hot to end food stamps, but this revelation may put an end to their opposition. This report had better end Republican and conservative hate of welfare, because it has been, and is, the mainstay of the economy and of their wealth. The wealthy are really on welfare too. “Wal-Mart for the first time in its annual reports acknowledges that taxpayer-funded social assistance programs are a significant factor in its revenue and profits, according to the International Business Times.” “This makes sense, considering that Wal-Mart caters to low-income consumers. But whats news here is that the company now considers the level of social entitlements given to low-income working and unemployed Americans important enough to underscore it in its cautionary statement.” That means that unemployment compensation is a valid concept for the economy. Grocers used to sneer at welfare customers and make dirty jokes about them, but they liked the money which those people brought in. Grocers ridiculed the last day of month as being “mother’s day”, in a derisive way. However, that money was their profit for the month in which it was distributed to welfare recipients. Businesses, especially retail ones and most especially grocery stores, were very much dependent on welfare money, but they never admitted that to anyone except people who worked for them, and then only by scorning the welfare recipients. A good comment on Wal-Mart’s strong focus on growth comes from the web. It is: Growth for the sake of growth is the ideology of the cancer cell. ~Edward Abbey Since the Koch boys, and other billionaires and persons of wealth, insist upon manipulating elections, the Freedom of Information Act should apply to them and they should be required to report their income and expenses, including and especially their political spending, and the amount of money which they have hidden overseas and anywhere else. They should submit to an audit by an independent investigator, and that audit should be made public. If they won’t cooperate they can go to prison for fraud. The Koch boys have wanted to destroy unions as have other wealthy persons, but the Supreme Court in Citizens United ruled that unions and other organizations are people also because those entities have people in them as do corporations. As a result unions have a right to exist and corporations must work with them. Such will go a long way toward ending poverty and unemployment. ALASKA DISCOVERS RUSSIA “Petition to allow Alaska to rejoin Russia garners 17,000 signatures” “by HunterFollow” An item on the web, or in a newspaper, showed Putin towing Alaska toward Russia with a tugboat; then Sara Palin wouldn’t have to be looking into Russia from her back porch: She would be living in Russia. Apparently this was one petition which was received by the White House and noted by the media. It is written in humor. “Some rebranding may be required: To be taken with a moose-sized grain of salt:” “A petition to the Obama administration for the secession of Alaska back to Russia has reached more than 10,000 signatures in three days.” “The petition, entitled Alaska Back to Russia, was created by an unnamed Anchorage resident on Thursday, and has gathered signatures from Alaska and several other states. It cites historical evidence of previous visitors and claimants for ownership of the territory.” “The petition, which is of - lettuce, (let us), say dubious literacy, indeed - demands Vote for secession of Alaska from the United States and joining Russia and has over 17,000 signatures at present. But how does that stack up against other popular petitions?” The article showed that the petition to deport Bieber had received over 280, 000 signatures; and showed other petitions with varying numbers of signatures which have been received by Presidents over the years. “Its no petition to invite Neal Boortz to the White House to discuss tax reform, Ill tell you that.” “I am not sure we Americans have gotten the hang of this whole petition thing yet. Lets just say that allowing Alaska to secede and join greater Russia is probably not going to happen, and Neal Boortz is probably not going to be put in charge of revamping the nations tax codes, and Justin Bieber is probably not going to be forcibly deported via website vote.” “If we must take a lesson from this, then, let us take the most important one. The omnipresent one, the Great Unalterable Truth, the one that all true lovers of democracy should keep front most in their mind- always! - lest this great nation perish!- comment threads on media websites can be terrifying.” “Wait—not that. It was something else, probably something about liberty and stuff. Darn, now Ive forgotten it.” (“Originally posted to Hunter on Mon Mar 24, 2014 at 11:01 AM PDT. Also republished by Daily Kos.”)
