INDEPENDENT SCHOOL IN ALBUQUERQUE TO TRANSFORM CITY BLOCK With a mission to engage and enrich children in the arts and an enrollment this year of some 200 students, the not-for-profit Escuela del Sol Montessori is one of the most successful independent schools in Albuquerque. Now the school and its Harwood Art Center at 111 7th Street NW want to transform the entire block it operates on between 7th and 6th Streets. Both the school and the center are inviting letters of inquiry from architectural firms to develop a master plan process for a campus that is the home to what used to be called the Harwood Girls School, a two-story, H-shaped building, as well as the rest of the block, which contains four other structures belonging to Escuela. Additional structures include a renovated 75 year-old chapel, and a two-story adobe building that houses classrooms as well as the school’s library and administrative offices. The school hopes to select an architect in March and have the master planning process completed by no later than early 2016.
