INDIA 2014 IT RUNNING SHIRTS ARE AWINNER intraining Brisbane runner, Pete Lane Rai and his wife Dot visit India each October and November to conduct family and relational seminars in Church Youth groups and Bible Colleges. They also encourage the students to do some exercise rather than sit around studying all the time. As in previous years, he also took 25 Brisbane Running Festival 2012 T-shirts donated by intraining to give out to anyone who ran or did some exercise with them.. This is not that easy in a culture that does not really encourage exercise and even if you wanted to do running road conditions are generally horrendous with packed city roads from 7 am . The diet also is not conducive to exercise, being overloaded with rice, salt, oil and sugar which leads to people being overweight. Their first stop was in north India in Dehra Dun at the base of the Himalayan foothills. Pete normally does his annual run on the windy hill road from Dehra Dun (2000asl) to Mussorie (6000asl), a distance of 35 km. This year he did it differently by hitch hiking from Dehra Dun to Mussoorie, then running back the shorter hill route of around 22 km. As he descended he had magnificent views of the Dun Valley, rivers, temples, mosques and ran amongst fields, farms, cows, buffaloes and dogs. When some students staying in the same hostel as Pete and his wife heard of his run they also wanted to exercise with him for a few days. So when they did this, he rewarded them with a running shirt. Next stop was outside Hyderabad, central India for two weeks on a beautiful, rural, student campus. Pete managed to get the 15 male students,to exercise with him most days and those who did four sessions received a shirt. They did not think that they could exercise without a gym and equipment, which means money . .So Pete showed them how - as they did pushups, crunches, sprints, weight lifting with rocks, shadow boxing and d an obstacle course in a children’s playground. Naturally they were delighted to realize how easy exercise can be and especially thrilled that they were rewarded with a shirt! There was an amazing turn around with the girls ,who the first week we were there, spent all their free time in their rooms and then complained of headaches and body pains. Dot did a class on the importance of exercise” but felt she was talking to deaf ears .Yet amazingly that night the ten girls, mainly from N east India , went out to exercise and the next nights squealed and laughed as they played volley ball ! .A female staff member was amazed at their complete transformation. The final stop was Bangalore where they did 14 hours of lectures with students at a Bible College . Their final day was the annual Sports Day which included a “marathon” ( a 3km race ) and to every ones surprise Pete decided to run . He finished 5th out of 50 students and this so impressed the staff that they invited him back for two weeks next year not only to give lectures but also to introduce a fitness programme for students and staff !. So a big thanks intraining for those shirts which bring so much pleasure to so many needy students from all over India. Pete Lane Rai
