INDIA MUMBAI CONSUMER COURT PENALIZED A COLLEGE FOR DUPING 10 STUDENTS BY FALSELY CLAIMING ITS MBA COURSE WAS RECOGNIZED BY INDIRA GANDHI NATIONAL OPEN UNIVERSITY AND HAS BEEN ORDERED TO REFUND FEES OF RS.1.5 LAKHS WITH INTEREST OF 12%ON AMOUNT SINCE 2009 PLUS RS 5000/-AS COMPLAINT COST July 27.2013 MUMBAI: A consumer forum has penalized a college in Kandivli for duping 10 students by falsely claiming that its MBA course was recognized by Indira Gandhi National Open University (Ignou). Suman Education Society will have to refund each of the 10 students the course fee, which is Rs 1.5 lakh, and pay an interest of 12% on the amount since 2009. Each student will also get Rs 5,000 as complaint cost. A consumer forum brought to book a Kandivali based college for duping 10 students by claiming that their MBA course had recognition by the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). Suman Education Society will have to refund Rs 1.5 lakh to each of the 10 students alongwith an interest of 12 percent from 2009. Each complainant will also receive Rs 5,000 as costs of the complaint. The forum said if an institute started a course after fraudulently representing that it had recognition from a university, the act would amount to cheating. The false representation amounted to unfair trade practice, it added. The students claimed the college had assured them its MBA course was recognized by Ignou. Relying on the information, they enrolled for the degree course in August 2009 and each paid Rs 1.50 lakh.
