INDIA The first picture is the Buddha in my living room that came home with me from India, and the second was taken just outside one of the Indian temples. MUDRAS are a non verbal mode of communication using hand and finger gestures in Buddhism and Hinduism. When the tips of the index finger and thumb of the right hand touch forming a circle while the other fingers are extended upwards, this is the VITARKA MUDRA or the gesture of debate and intellectual discussion, used when explaining the Buddhas teachings. When a bowl of medicinal herbs rests on the left hand, it signifies healing and is the MEDICINE MUDRA. The cross-legged sitting position with the feet placed on opposite thighs is called the LOTUS POSITION. It is used in meditation and encourages proper breathing and physical stability. My buddha has the vitarka mudra and the medicine mudra, but I cant quite make out the hand gestures of the other one. Both are sitting in the lotus position. Now you know it all. Enjoy !!!
