INEC lack simple problem solving skills I have not yet broken my promise to stay off political posts and comments. So if you have not seen me tear down whatever you put up in support of your party, it is because I made a promise to stay off politics this week. Still on the issue of Permanent Voter Cards(PVCs). Over the last two days, I have spoken with about 15 people from different localities here in Lagos who are yet to get their PVCs. For some, it has been come today, come tomorrow. For others, the INEC staff either have been unruly, unhelpful or outright indifferent. I have read up, and checked out almost all avenues that the Commission plans to reduce the yawning gap of millions who may be disenfranchised by February 14. And have also got information that for some, their PVCs were misplaced. Some people in my Kosofe Local Government had theirs located in Epe, or Apapa and vise versa. INEC has the database, yet they have not utilised it maximally. If you go to any of the INEC offices in the local governments, you will see hundreds of thousands of PVCs idling away in their containers. Why are people complaining that they cant get their PVCs while INEC is shouting that people are not coming, yet those who came cant find theirs. What of complete units where nobody has got anything? INEC like other Nigerian public institutions cant think outside the box in solving problems. I have thought about this, and this idea came up. If every voter gave a phone number during registration, and INEC has the contact phone numbers of everybody that registered, why cant INEC collate the unclaimed PVCs in its possession, check through the phone numbers of the owners, and call or send sms to them on where to go and pick their cards? Through the phone numbers of people you can get across to them. Simple! But as with other public institutions in Nigeria, they rather do things their own ways that hardly work.
