INFLUENCE. So I picked up my Star and Globe from the doorstep this morning and a neat-looking horizontal magazine falls out. Spacing! What a great idea, is my thought, figuring they, like other magazines have done, are hitching a ride on whats left of the newspaper circulation juggernaut. We do still print in the hundreds of thousands, but oops, its just an advertising insert. But very nice. Immitation is, of course, flattery; we have Harbourfront Centre appealing the the urbane sensibilities Spacing has cultivated in Toronto, to promote its new photography exhibit, No flat city: Torontos incomparable terrain, now apparently on. See some of the cool photos, the Spacing-inspired layout, below. Aside from the content -- this inserts a rare keeper -- its nice to see the power of print still understood and used. Both in this slick, clever offering with our newspapers this morning, and in the power of Spacing, whose influence for the good in Toronto has been incalculable. Shining the camera eye and writers prose into every corner of the great city, validating who and what we are from Mies masterpieces to the junk cars that turn up on the weedy edges of parking lots in the Golden Mile. Now Spacings influence is literally spilling out of other media all over Toronto.
