INITIATIVES IN SOCIAL MEDIA This week’s article is the first of two articles explaining initiatives in social media. As a social media user/rent payer/car driver/food eater/water drinker, it is hard for me to be convinced to even consider buying anything beyond my bare necessities. I know I am only one person out of billions, but I am willing to bet that there are a LOT of people out there like me who need to thoroughly consider the things I should and shouldn’t buy every month. Pay attention, businesses: Most people don’t have a lot of extra time or money to spend on your services. So, what can you do? How do you get the bulk of your followers to not only stay interested, but to actually participate in your business despite a limited supply of funds and time? The answer is simple: INITIATIVES! The bulk of businesses that use social media tend to stick only to basic advertisements: “Hey Facebook user, click on our link and buy our stuff because its pretty cool stuff!” No matter how awesome you think your company is, your followers will need some initiative from time to time to “keep in touch” with it. Some examples that I have seen, and even participated in, include some kind of reward for my actions that would benefit the advertiser’s company. Need more followers? Offer a discount or some free stuff on a raffle system to followers that repost your photo and tag three of their friends in it. That person is eligible to win, and their three friends are exposed to your company, hopefully following it in the process. Are your existing followers not really noticing your company lately? Have them take a photo that has to do with your company’s services and post it to your page(s) with proper hashtags. The person who posts the best photo wins something cool from your company. Followers are engaged, people are tagging your business, their friends see it, the list of benefits goes on and on. Many of these initiatives are based on a rewards system. Now, I understand that some people might frown at the thought of giving away free stuff to their followers. It helps to think of your giveaway, be it free stuff or a discount, as a small investment that has the potential to take your company to the top of your followers’ news feeds, leading them to be more persuaded to use your services. Now, before you begin covering your followers’ feeds with your awesome contests and such, you must understand that there are a few important rules and guidelines for different social media sites that need to be followed. We will cover just what those are next week in part two of this article. By: Alec England, columnist, The Site Vamp thesitevamp/initiatives-social-media/
