INSERT 110 I had now arrived safely at home. After that whole saga with Nwabisa I went to book a bus ticket and I got home without any hassles. I decided to not speak to Nwabisa for a couple of days. I needed some space from her… When I got home my mom was obviously ecstatic. I missed her loud and bubbly energy. It was way better than the misery and anger that Nwabisa brought. As soon as I got home my mom unpacked my suitcase and washed my clothes. I went to freshen up and went to help her with hanging the clothes. Me: Mama yazi I need your advice. Her: Yini sisi? Me: UNwabisa. Her: Wenzeni? Me: She’s in an abusive relationship mama… Her: Nci ci ci... Me: Yana. Her: Is it the man she came with ngalesasikhathi? Me: Yes. Her: Kodwa ngasho yazi Inathi. Me: She keeps going back to him. She nodded. Her: Inkinga ukuthi you can never tell such a person to move on. They become very stubborn. Me: Exactly. Her: Have you spoken to her? Me: So many times mama! Her: She will never take your advice. Ikhanda alisebenzi kahle and it’s not her fault. This man has managed to get into her head. Me: That’s why I’ve been patient but I can’t anymore. Her: Nwabisa knows that this relationship is not good for her. Wazi kahle kodwa angeke aze aphume until she reaches a breaking point. Once she has reached that point everything will come crashing down and uzobona ukuthi mele azikhiphe. You can preach about abuse every second of the day kodwa she will not listen to you. That man has obviously done a good job in getting into her head. I nodded. Her: We can’t do anything about it. Me: Can’t we tell her mother? Her: I’ll talk to her mother kodwa ke we can’t be too involved. We all have to learn our lessons. Nawe you went through your own struggles angithi and you learnt a great deal about life through those struggles. Let her go through her struggles. Me: Okay. Her: But just continue to be there for her. I’m sure you know how it feels like to feel isolated when a man is busy abusing you. I nodded. Her: And maybe you could tell her about what happened to you. She might listen with a different ear makezwa ukuthi you also went through the same thing. Me: I’ll see… Her: Abusive relationships are quite difficult to deal with. Be patient with her. Me: Okay. Her: So uthi ubhale kahle? Me: Kuzamekile. Her: Qeda sisi uzobuya ekhaya. Me: What do you mean? Haibo I’m not coming back here when I’m done. I’m moving out. Her: And who’s going to cook, clean and wash your clothes in that apartment? Me: Ngizofunda. Her: Mxm uyabheda wena. We finished hanging everything and went back to the house. Her: Unjani uSizwesethu? Me: U-right. Her: Hmm. I ignored her and went to my bedroom and took a nap. *** When I woke up later on in the evening my dad was there and he seemed healthy again. We did some catching up before he went bed. He was under strict orders to sleep for 8 hours every single day. Lack of sleep would trigger all his previous health problems. *** I had been at home for just over a week and I was definitely well-rested. I had 4 more weeks of doing absolutely nothing. That Friday my mom walked into my room. Mom: Ntombi. Me: Yebo ma? I looked at her and she smiled. Me: What did you do ke manje? Her: Hai kanti yini wena? I sat up and looked at her and she came and sat next to me. Her: Odwa’s- Me: Odwa’s what?!! Hai man- I felt a blazing clap across my face and my mouth was shut completely. I sat there dumbstruck. I could feel my cheek pulsing. Her: I’m not your friend. That time this evil woman was so calm and collected. I touched my cheek and rubbed it lightly. Her: Odwa’s mom invited us for lunch tomorrow. She wants to see you. Me: I’m not her frie- Her: Khulumela phezulu ngizokuzwa kahle. I kept quiet. Her: Thought as much. She stood up and looked down at me. Her: Uhle uphaphe nje and I will blacksam you in front of that God-fearing family. With that said she walked out of the room and closed the door. I heard her sing along to her gospel music and I lay on my bed. Being at home now seemed to have more disadvantages than advantages. It seemed like my freedom had been snatched away and I would be given hot claps for protesting. I got up from the bed and went to the kitchen where she was busy. Me: Mama I don’t want to be around Odwa. She looked at me. Her: My love, Odwa is the purest person you will ever meet. Why would you not want to be close to such a respectable young man? I looked at her. This woman just never seizes to amaze. I didn’t even know what to say to what she had just said. Her: I had nothing to do with this. Her mother wants to see you qha. Me: Well in that case I’m not going to eat your food because the heavens know I wouldn’t want to make their glorious house stink because of the things you put in my food. Her: Inathinkosi! I turned and walked to my room. *** The next day finally arrived. I hadn’t even slept one bit. I was so restless… As I was taking a bath my mom walked in the bathroom. Mom: Hurry up Ntombi. We have to get going. I ignored her and carried on bathing. After a while I finished up and got dressed. Mom: Are you done? I kept quiet and did my hair. Mom: Ohho. She walked out. I finished up and took my bag and walked out of my room. Mom: Perfect! Let’s go. We walked out and got a taxi. I took out my phone and texted Hlumi. I couldn’t even finish my text because my mom snatched my phone from me. Mom: Not today! Mxm. *** We finally got to Rosebank Mall and we waited for whomever who was fetching us. Mom: Ntombi ngicela ungabi rude. Not today, please. I kept quiet. Mom: I will embarrass you in front of them if you start your nonsense. I didn’t say anything. This pimp angered me so much… As we were waiting, some car approached us and parked next to us. Seconds later Odwa’s mom walked out and came to us. Odwa’s mom: Ntombi! Me: Hello ma. She hugged me warmly. Her: How are you love? Me: I’m good thanks and how are you? Her: I’m fantastic! I nodded and we got in the car. Her: It’s been so long! Mxm. She started the car and drove off.
