INSERT 24 (We’re moving on to Luyanda after this) #Nomvuyo We drove to Milky Lane to get some ice cream for Nyami. She insisted on all three of us coming with her. We got there and she also insisted that we all order some ice cream. We got a table and sat down. Nyami: Zimi when am I going to school? Zimkitha: You’ll go sometime next week baby. Nyami: So that means I can watch TV all day? Zimkitha smiled and nodded. Nyami: Uncle when are you going back home? Liwa: Not anytime soon. Nyami: When will Bongani come back? Liwa: Bongani is with his other granny. We’ll see him this weekend. Nyami: I miss him and Lungile. Liwa: You’ll see them soon. She smiled and carried on licking her ice-cream. She turned to look at me. Her: Are you feeling better Vuvu? Ice-cream makes everyone feel better. Me: I feel much better now Nyami and what about you? Her: I’m good thank you. Zimkitha smiled. Zimkitha: You make me so proud Nyami. Nyami looked at Zimkitha. Zimkitha: You’re such a smart young lady… Nyami: Thank you Zimi. Zimkitha still wasn’t looking at me. I ate my ice-cream in silence and after a while we finished up. Nyami: Mommy can we please watch a movie. Me: Nyami. Nyami: Please Vuvu! Me: No not today. We’ll come back some other time. Zimkitha: Take her to the cinema Nomvuyo. Liwa will take me home and he’ll come back to fetch you. Me: No we’ll watch a movie some other time. Liwa: I don’t mind… I shook my head. Nyami: Mommy please! Me: Hai Nyameko. Liwa: Take Zimkitha home and come back. I certainly want to watch a movie. Nyami smiled. I kept quiet. Liwa: The house is literally 10 minutes away. Nyami: Please mommy! Me: Alright. Zimkitha: Nyami come give me a kiss. Nyami walked to her and they shared a kiss. She then came to me and I kissed her. Her: Thank you Vuvu. Me: Ok I’ll be back now now. She went to Liwa and he held her hand and they walked away. Zimkitha turned and walked away. I walked behind her till we got to the car. We got in and I drove off. Zimkitha: I can’t bring myself to even look at you. I kept quiet. Her: I’m already dealing with the passing of my sister. I don’t need any more stress Nomvuyo. Noma ufuna ngife njengoZodwa? I kept quiet. Her: All I ask right now is for you to hold on till we bury your mother. Once we’re past that phase then you can do whatever you want. It’s not fair to throw me off guard at a time when I’m so vulnerable and I don’t have enough strength to fight back. I kept quiet till we got to the house. She got out of the car and walked in the yard. I started the car and drove back to the mall. I got there and made my way to the cinema and got there just in time. Liwa and Nyami were done with the popcorn. We made our way inside the theatre and found seats. I was just glad that Nyami was happy. ****** When we got back to the house everyone was seated in the lounge. As soon as we got in, Jenny went straight to Liwa and slapped him hard. Everyone looked at her in shock and confusion. Zimkitha: Angisazi ke manje! Jennifer ran out of the house and Nyami started crying. I was so confused. For a second there my heart rate was on another level. Liwa looked at me briefly before running off after Jennifer. I stared at Princess and she winked at me. Zimkitha: Nyami come here baby. Nyami went to Zimkitha and sat on her lap. Zimkitha: Hush now… She calmed down. Princess: Umeleni lapho sisi? Khona into ekudlayo? She chuckled. Me: I’m going to the cottage. Zimkitha: You’re not sleeping in that place. Me: Zimkitha please… She looked at me and I turned and walked away. As I got out of the house I heard Jenny crying outside. I stood by the door and eavesdropped. Liwa: Why did you put your hands on me? If I had slapped you, you would have run to the police and called me an abuser. Jenny: I want to go home! Liwa: Then go Jennifer. No one is stopping you. Jenny: I’m your wife Liwa. You and I have been married for years! Liwa: Manje? Jenny: Liwa every time I come here I am constantly treated like a stranger! Your mother doesn’t treat me well. You always play with that maid’s ki- I heard a loud piercing sound. Jenny: Liwa! She started crying all over again. Liwa didn’t say anything. Jenny: My own husband is cold towards me. Liwa every time I come here I feel like you don’t love me. Liwa: Jennifer you are disrespectful. Jenny: Who have I disrespected to deserve such treatment from you? Is it that stupid maid? Is she the one I have disrespected? That worthless piece o- I heard another loud piercing sound. Jenny: I’m leaving! Liwa: You should have left a long time ago. Her: Liwa! Liwa: If you stay here then you better watch your filthy mouth. If I hear you snicker or utter one disrespectful word then I am going to slap the piss out of you. Mam’Zodwa raised me. I will not have you tarnish her family’s image. If you can’t understand the dynamics of this family even after all these years then you might as well get a divorce lawyer. She kept quiet. Liwa: Watch your mouth Jennifer. She didn’t say anything. I heard him walk and I straightened up and made it seem like I was only walking out now. I bumped into him and he looked at me. He looked really angry. Him: Uyaphi? Me: The cottage. Him: Khona into oyibeke khona? Me: I have always slept there. Manje mele ngenzeni? Him: Nomvuyo now is not the time for your nonsense. Jenny walked in and looked at me with her puffy red face. Jenny: Yes Nomvuyo, we would like you to sleep in the house. God knows something tragic will happen if we mistreat you, Miss Madam Queen. With that said she walked away. Me: Your wife has some serious issues. He looked at me. Him: We both know that part of those issues stem from some truth. I pushed him to the side and got out of the house for some fresh air…
