INSERT 25 #Nomvuyo I sat outside for a while and tried to think of who would come to Zodwa’s funeral. She had a couple of friends who were maids as well around the neighbourhood. Other than that I couldn’t think of anyone else. Just then Nyami approached me. She got to me and threw herself at me. Me: You’re far too big to be throwing yourself at me now! She giggled and then wrapped her arms around my neck. Nyami: Mommy why did Aunty Jenny hit Uncle Liwa? Me: Uncle Liwa made Aunty Jenny very mad. Nyami: But isn’t it wrong to hit someone? Me: It is very wrong. Her: Then Aunty Jenny is wrong? Me: Yes she is. Her: But she is old. Me: So? Her: Old people are not wrong. I chuckled and kissed her. Me: Your innocence warms my heart Nyami. She smiled and we sat there while she talked about school and how she missed Bongani. After a while it became dark. Me: Let’s go inside madam. We stood and made our way to the house hand in hand. I was actually very exhausted. I wasn’t in the mood to be with people. All I wanted to do was hold my Nyami and sleep peacefully but none of that takes place in this house. There’s always something… We got in the house and Zimkitha was busy cooking. Nyami: Zimi you’re cooking? Zimkitha smiled. Zimkitha: Yes baby. What would you like to eat? Nyami: Anything is fine Granny. Zimkitha nodded and carried on. Me: Would you like me to help? Zimkitha: Yes please. Nyami: Can I also help?? Zimkitha: Of course young lady! Nyami and I washed our hands. Zimkitha took a footstool and placed it by the sink. She made Nyami stand on it. Zimkitha: Your task is to clean the vegetables Nyami. Nyami: Ok. Zimkitha placed all the vegetables in the sink and Nyami began cleaning the veggies. Zim and I did the rest. After a while Princess walked in. Princess: Mom can I please talk to you in private? I looked at Princess. Zimkitha: The food will be ready in 15 minutes. Let me finish up quickly here. Her: Alright. She smiled and then walked out. Zimkitha: I honestly cannot keep up with that girl’s moods. Me: You’re preaching to the church. She laughed and then we finished up. Me: I’ll dish up. Go and speak to her. Zimkitha: Alright then. Nyami got bored of cooking and went to watch TV with the rest of the family. I took out all the plates and took them to the eating area. Nyami ran to me. Me: Don’t you want to set up the table? Her: Ok. I put the plates on the table and went to the kitchen to fetch the cutlery and serviettes. Nyami set everything up. I went back to the kitchen to fetch the food and placed everything in the middle of the table. Me: Go tell everyone that the food is ready. She ran to the lounge and I heard her announce that supper was ready. Minutes later everyone walked to the table and sat down. Princess and Zimkitha were still not there. I tried to brush it off and I sat next to Nyami. After everyone had dished up, I dished up for Nyami and me. Luvuyo: Where are my wife and daughter. Me: They are outside. Luvuyo: Would you mind calling them? I’m starving! Me: Ok. I stood up and walked out of the house. Zimkitha and Princess were sitting by the pool. I walked to them and Princess looked at me. Princess: Ufunani? I cleared my throat. Me: Dinner is ready. I looked at Zimkitha and she avoided my eyes. Princess: Mama woza sambe. Zimkitha: I need a few minutes of fresh air. Princess: Okay… I turned around and walked. Princess: Vuvu wait for me! I turned and looked at her. She smiled and I gave her a weird look. We made our way inside and went to sit at the table. Luvuyo: Hai man uphi uZimkitha? Princess: Relax dad. Uyeza she just needs some fresh air. I looked at Liwa and he looked at Nyami and smiled. Nyami: I’m hungry! Luvuyo: I’m also hungry! Jenny: Kanti uphi uZimi? The food is getting co- Zimkitha: Hai phela asingaphaphelani. Luvuyo: Bekunini! Zimkitha sat down and we all dug in and ate. Zimkitha didn’t touch her food. Princess: Did you all know that Whitney Houston’s family has a reality show? Luvuyo: After her death? Princess: Yes. Jenny: Really? That is so vile. What is it about? Princess: Well the main focus right now is on Bobby Kristina, Whitney’s daughter. Luvuyo: Shame is she copying? Princess: Not at all… Remember there was always some guy who is the same age as Bobby Kristina? Jenny: The one Whitney took in and treated as her child? Princess: Yes… Him… So he and Bobby Kristina are technically brother and sister. Luvuyo nodded. Princess: Well they recently came out and admitted that they are in a relationship. Jenny: As in they are dating? Princess: Yep. There are engaged. Luvuyo: That is disgusting! They are brother and sister! Princess: But Whitney didn’t really adopt the boy. She kind of took him in and took care of him. Jenny: But they were raised as brother and sister. Luvuyo: Is the family on board ngaleyo nonsense? Princess: Not at all. Everyone in the family is against it. They want them to end the relationship. Luvuyo: Hmm ama American ayanyanyisa. You will never find that here in South Africa ngoba bangalimala! No parent will allow such. It’s incest! Princess: Well not really. They’re not related biologically! Luvuyo: No Princess. These kids were raised as siblings. Just because an official paper doesn’t exist it does not dampen the principle! I cleared my throat. Me: Can Nyami and I be excused? She’s already falling asleep. Princess: Of course sis wami. You can be excused. Shame man my poor niece is tired. I looked at her and she smiled warmly. Princess: You remember how everyone at school freaked out when we told them that we’re not biological sisters? They all couldn’t believe it because we look so much alike! She giggled. Princess: But at the end of the day, you’ll always be my sister. Like daddy said, it’s the principle that counts… I smiled and nodded. I stood up. Princess: I’ll wash the dishes tonight! Liwa will you help me out brother? Liwa looked at her and didn’t say anything. Nyami stood up and we walked up the stairs. I made my way to the bedroom and put Nyami to sleep. She was too tired to change her clothes. I sat on the bed and tried to gather my thoughts. Just then there was a knock on the door. I went and opened it. Me: Zimi… She looked at me. Her: May I come in? Me: Sure. I moved out of the way and she got in. She looked at Nyami and then sat on the bed. I closed the door and went to sit next to her. Zimkitha: You were right… I think its best you really move out. I looked at her. Zimkitha: After the funeral you and Nyami can go and start afresh somewhere else… I kept quiet and she stood up. Her: Good night. She walked out and closed the door. I sat there and blanked out.
