INSERT 88 #Nomvuyo Evelyn: Zimkitha vuka mntana ndini! Zimkitha buried herself in the covers and refused to let the world in. Evelyn: Zimkitha! Evelyn removed the covers roughly and gasped in shock. She backed up and stared at the bed. Zimkitha lay there not feeling anything. Throughout the years she had managed to shut out everything and allow herself to be numb. The only thing she did feel however was her grooming love for Luvuyo. Evelyn: Oh mntanami! Evelyn walked back to the bed and touched Zimkitha’s face. Zimkitha opened her eyes and looked at her mother. Evelyn: Woza baby. Evelyn reached down to her daughter and helped her get out of bed. As soon as Zimkitha got out of bed the blood flowed more heavily down between her legs. Evelyn took her hand and led her to the bathroom. Once there she took her to the shower and opened the water. Zimkitha stood there and let the water splash on her. Evelyn walked back to the bed and took out the sheets. She walked out of the room with the sheets and made her way downstairs. She walked out and threw the sheets away. As she was about to walk back in the house she bumped into Nomvuyo. She looked at her. Nomvuyo: Gogo uphi uZimi? Evelyn looked down at the 10 year old Nomvuyo. For the past 9 years she had tried to hate the child with all her might but she didn’t have it in her. From the time they brought her there she couldn’t let herself hate her. As she grew up, her innocence tore her. She also couldn’t believe how much Zimkitha loved her. It left her confused… Evelyn: Zimi is sick. Nomvuyo looked at Evelyn, slowly showing sadness. Evelyn: But she’ll be fine. Don’t worry. Nomvuyo: Can I see her? Evelyn: Not now. Nomvuyo sulked and Liwa also walked in. Liwa: Gogo where’s ma? I’m hungry. Evelyn: She is sick dammit! Go and play! Liwa: No I’m hungry. Evelyn: Go and ask Zodwa. It’s her job after all! Liwa: Can’t I ask Gog’Rose? Zodwa’s food tastes unusual. Evelyn: Liwa! Liwa: I’m just saying… Evelyn: Sukani endleleni! She pushed Liwa and Nomvuyo out of the way and walked back to Zimkitha and Luvuyo’s bedroom. Liwa looked at Nomvuyo. Liwa: What’s wrong with you? Nomvuyo: Zimi is sick. Liwa: She’ll be fine. They walked down to the cottage and sat behind it. Evelyn got to the bedroom and walked to the shower. When she peeped through the door Zimkitha was sitting down and had her head hidden in her arms. Evelyn walked back to the bed and began to clean it. She cleaned the blood and dried the mattress. There were was still a big mark left so she turned it upside down and hid the stain. She put in fresh sheets and covers and when she was done she walked back to the bathroom. She took Zimi out of the shower and dried her up. There was still blood coming out but it wasn’t as heavy as before. Now it was clots. Evelyn went to her bedroom and came back with a big cotton cloth. She folded it and laid it on Zimkitha’s underwear and helped Zimkitha slide the underwear up. She took out a dress and dressed her daughter. Once she was dressed she combed and tied her hair properly and then gave her some pills. She made Zimkitha sit down and made her face her. Her: I’ve been through this so many times mntanam and it’s clear that I have spread it over to you as well… I’m sorry. Zimkitha looked at her mother and didn’t say anything. Her: The blood will stop after a few days, once everything is out of your system. I will change the thick cloth in an hour. Zimkitha kept quiet. Evelyn: Ngiyaxolisa mntanam. You will never get the chance to have a baby willingly. Liwa and Princess were your last chance. Zimkitha lowered her body and lay down. Evelyn: Ngiyaxolisa sisi… She caressed her arm and watched as her daughter closed her eyes. Once Zimkitha had fallen asleep, Evelyn stood up and walked out of the room. She closed the door and made her way to her bedroom where she found her husband. She sat next to him and he put down the book he was reading and took off his glasses. Patrick: Kwenzenjani? Evelyn: Siphumile isisu sakhe. Patrick took a deep breath and they sat in silence. Evelyn: We have to meet with Luvuyo’s family. Patrick: I will contact the father. Evelyn nodded and got up from the bed. Patrick: How is she? Evelyn: Distraught. Patrick: My poor child. Evelyn walked out of the room and closed the door. As she walked, she pumped into Nomvuyo. Nomvuyo ran to Zimkitha’s room and opened the door. Evelyn: Ye wena mntanandini! She rushed and got in the room as well. Nomvuyo was already on the bed and was lying next to Zimi. Nomvuyo: Zimi wake up! She patted Zimkitha’s cheek and Zimkitha opened her eyes. Evelyn: Phuma lana Nomvuyo! Nomvuyo: No. Evelyn went to Nomvuyo and tried dragging her but Nomvuyo jumped up and ran to the other side of the room. Evelyn was too old for this. Zimkitha cleared her throat and raised her head slightly. Zimkitha: Woza lana Nomvuyo. Evelyn: Hai Zimkitha. Zimkitha: Woza. Nomvuyo ran to the bed and lay next to Zimkitha. Zimkitha put her arm around Nomvuyo and looked at her. Nomvuyo: Zimi are you sick? Zimkitha nodded. Evelyn walked out of the room and shut the door. There was obviously no separating them. Nomvuyo: Your mouth is dry Zimi, do you want me to lotion it? Zimkitha chuckled. Zimkitha: Not lotion. Moisturise. Vuvu: Okay. She stood up and grabbed a tub of Vaseline and put some on Zimkitha’s mouth. Zimkitha: Thank you baby. Nomvuyo: You’re welcome. They laid there for a while and Zimkitha felt her body relax and warm up. These moments with Nomvuyo brought her much joy. She had grown to love her and had dedicated her life to making sure she is treated well regardless of her not being biologically tied to her. Nomvuyo: Zimi can I go play now? Zimkitha: Yes you can baby. Nomvuyo got closer to her and planted a kiss on her cheek. She got up from the bed and ran out of the room. *** Evelyn: Sanibonani. Vince: We do not have time Mrs. Mzinyathi. Will Nomvuyo give birth or not? Patrick: Let’s be civil here. Vince: My son has to have an heir. How will my family legacy continue if your daughter keeps having miscarriages? Evelyn: Don’t you da- Patrick: Thula Evelyn. Evelyn kept quiet. Vince: We obviously need to re-negotiate the deal. Patrick: Okay… Evelyn wanted to stop all of this but she was in way too deep. She had allowed for her daughter to be treated like a commodity and it’s something she would die regretting.
