They have shown that the stress levels in the body are decreased, reasoning and decision making are increased and that meditation has been shown to have many long lasting and powerful health benefits. Perhaps they should have talked to the millions of people around the world who are already benefiting from meditation training? 1) Increases Grey Matter A 2005 study showed that learning awareness meditation results in an increase in grey matter. Meditation enhances attention, introspection, and sensory processing. 2) Positively Rewires Your Brain Learning a form of awareness meditation will lead to positive changes in the structure of your brain. Occasionally when you are meditating, an issue will enter your thoughts and in a relaxed state decide if you want to fix a problem or not. Meditating will help you distinguish between how you really feel about something and how you are being told to feel about it. It will also allow you to see things from different perspectives giving you a better understanding of all sides of an issue. 6) Boosts Immune System Awareness meditation habit will strengthen the bodys immune function, and increase brain performance. Our immune system is made up of tiny biological structures and processes. It protects us from unwanted viruses. Meditation has been shown to have positive effects on the body and the mind boosting the immune system. Scientists have found that meditators have more antibodies than non-meditators and so are better equipped to fight off viruses. 7) Balances Your Emotions Awareness meditation is unique because it teaches you to watch your thoughts and emotions come and go. With experience, you become aware of their nature and are able to become less attached to them. This helps you accept change as new things come in and old things leave. Awareness meditation helps you begin to observe your thoughts and emotions from an “external” perspective. 8) Enhances Creativity With practice, awareness meditation will enhance your creativity significantly. The meditation quiets your self-critic letting creativity flow. Meditation reduces activity in the areas of the brain responsible for “filtering” ideas. This allows more unusual ideas to get through the filtration. 9) Reduces Stress When you meditate, your mind’s focus is on the now. By focusing on the now you stop holding on to past events and you stop worrying about the future. This brings you peace in the now. Meditation is known to reduce high intensity gamma brain waves, which are associated with stress, and to increase alpha and theta waves, which are associated with relaxation.
