INSPIRATIONAL CONFUTE QUESTION: If you ask them as to who created the heavens and the earth, they will certainly say, “Allah.” Say, “Then, tell me about those whom you invoke other than Allah, if Allah intends to cause some harm to me, are they (able) to remove the harm caused by Him? Or if He intends to bless me with mercy, are they (able) to hold back His mercy (from me)?” Say, “Allah is sufficient for me. In Him trust those who (rightly) trust (in someone).” [AL-QURAN: Chapter#39, Verse#38] Tafsir al-Jalalayn : And if (wa-la-in: the lām is for oaths) you ask them, ‘Who created the heavens and the earth?’ they will surely say, ‘God.’ Say: ‘Have you considered then those on whom you call, [those whom] you worship, besides God, namely, the idols, if God should desire some harm to befall me, would they [be able to] remove the harm imposed by Him? No! Or if He should desire some mercy for me, would they [be able to] withhold His mercy?’ No! (a variant reading for the two clauses [kāshifātun durrahu and mumsikātun rahmatahu] has the genitive construction [kāshifātu durrihi and mumsikātu rahmatihi). Say: ‘God is sufficient for me. In Him do [all] the trusting put their trust’. Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs : (And verily, if thou shouldst ask them) i.e. the disbelievers of Mecca: (Who created the heavens and the earth? They) the disbelievers of Mecca (will say: Allah) created them. (Say) to them, O Muhammad: (Bethink you then of those ye worship beside Allah) al-Lat, al-Uzza and Manat, (if Allah willed some hurt) hardship or trial (for me, could they) i.e. al-Lat, al-Uzza and Manat (remove from me His hurt) His hardship and trial; (or if He willed some mercy) well-being (for me, could they) i.e. al-Lat, al-Uzza and Manat (restrain His mercy) from me, such that you ask me to worship them? (Say) O Muhammad: (Allah is my all) I trust in Allah. (In Him do (all) the trusting put their trust) it is also said that this means: the believers should put their trust in Allah. Tafsir al-Tustari (sufi) : [Say] ‘…If God should desire some harm to befall me, would they [be able] to remove the harm imposed by Him?’…He said:That is, ‘If God removed from me protection against acts of opposition (mukhālafāt), or the knowledge (maʿrifa) of acts of conformity (muwāfaqāt), could anyone bring them back to me? Or if He should desire some mercy for me, that is, in granting me forbearance (ṣabr) in avoidingwhat He has forbidden, and assistance (maʿūna) in carrying out what He has commanded, and in granting me full reliance (ittikāl) on Him at the end [of my life], [could they withhold His mercy?].And he said:Mercy (raḥma) is well-being (ʿāfiya) in one’s religion, in this world and in the Hereafter.
