INTERNSHIPS II: The Historian as Detective: One of our students did an internship in the Morris County Heritage Commission, where she first transcribed veterans’ burial record cards from the Internment Office into an Excel spreadsheet and noticed that many of the 1,400 soldiers whose data she entered drowned in Kentucky on May 6, 1863. This led her to further research, using newspapers on microfilm and other sources. She prepared an article for the Commission’s newsletter on this event. In addition, she developed an exhibit on historic churches in Morris County. Using books in the Commission’s library, she wrote a paragraph or two about eighty different churches and learned much about architectural styles in the process. morriscountynj.gov/MCHC/
