INTRODUCING SOKOTEI - Sokotei is about a year old and her mother fought so hard to survive but on April 9th lost her battle. The autopsy on Cherie established that she had a twisted gut, and had not been able to defecate for nearly a week. A serious infection had taken hold as a result and internally her gut had begun to rot. Sokoteis blood work came back normal. We may never know exactly what goes on inside the mind of an elephant, but it would be arrogant of us to assume we are the only species capable of feeling loss and grief. Elephants really do grieve like us: They shed tears and even try to bury their dead.
