IRANIAN ARCHITECTURE IN GREAT IRAN : Part 2 (Please note the semi total resemblance of the architecture and design in both these buildings in these two geographically widely separated cities). 1- CHEHEL SOTOUN , ISFAHAN : Chehel Sotoun (Persian : Forty Columns) : A pavilion in the middle of a park in Isfahan located near Naqsh e- Jahan Sq. , built by Shah Abbas II (1632-1666) to be used for his entertainment and receptions . In this palace, Shah Abbas and his successors would receive dignitaries and ambassadors …. This pavilion has 20 slender wooden columns (please count them in this photo !) supporting the entrance which when reflected in the water of the fountain , are said to appear to be forty ! and from this the name came ! 2- BALA (BOLO) HAUZ MOSQUE , BUKHARA : Bala–Hauz mosque (Persian : the upper pool) or Forty Pillars mosque : A unique mosque in Bukhara , Uzbekistan , and was built in 1712 for Bibi Khanum, the mother of an Ashtarkhanid (or Janid) ruler (1711-47) . The mosque porch has 20 slender wooden columns which when reflected in the water of the adjacent pool (gohistoric) , are said to appear to be forty ! and from this the name came !
